REMEMBERING 9/11

Dear Friends,

As we move beyond the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, many lasting images of the remembrance remain. For me and so many others, the sight of thousands of people grasping hands along Lower Manhattan's westside waterfront in solidarity and unity is something we'll always remember. Hand in Hand—Remembering 9/11 was meant to be a simple and powerful statement open to everyone, no matter where you came from. And indeed you came: In big groups and small families, by yourself and with spouses and partners, pushing strollers and holding kids. At 8:46am, the bells rang and we reached down to grasp the hand of the person next to us, be it a friend, a family member or a stranger. Our connection quickly spread from the Battery north, with each person contributing to the power of the moment and our connection. Afterward, event participants and others filled our Wall of Remembrance in Battery Park with stirring messages and tributes. It was truly something to experience, and for those of you who joined us, I hope that you found it to be as emotional and worthwhile as I did.

Thank you to all who joined us and to all who sent messages of support from afar. Also thanks to our incredible volunteers, partners and supporters who generously donated their time, services, goods and expertise. This was a true partnership and I am humbled by the level of support we received from so many. We continue to gain more followers on our Facebook page. Please check back often, as we will be uploading more images from the day. We welcome you to share your experiences from Hand in Hand—Remembering 9/11, by posting your photos and comments on our Facebook Wall: http://www.facebook.com/HandinHand911.

On behalf of everyone at Community Board 1, thank you for helping us reflect, remember and unite as we stood, hand in hand, to remember 9/11.
